FAVORITES EXTRA LARGE

Summer 2015-2016 40th Anniversary Exhibition

This retrospective exhibition celebrates two milestones: first, it opened in 2015, 40 years after my first exhibition (Tacoma Art Museum); secondly, it introduces a new line of 40 x 60 inch prints. Taught by a student of Ansel Adam’s in the early 1970’s, I have printed black and white for over 40 years and color for over 30 years. 2015 was the 20th anniversary of my switch to digital printing. For this special event I re-mastered 12 of my favorite images.

Peter C Fisher Gallery Olympics from Turtlehead Orcas Island

Olympics from Turtlehead • 1986

This mid summer view is from Turtlehead looking south and a bit west towards the Olympic Mountains. The glare from the noon sun on the straights of Juan de Fuca creates a highlight in contrast to the effects of haze on the interceding islands. A contrail and two boats complete the nearly monochromatic composition.

Horsetail, Deer Harbor • 1988

The Horsetail is an ancient plant, beloved by artists for its unusual shape and loathed by gardeners for its invasive properties. In this photograph, I was lying on the forest flow with a telephoto macro lens. The green glow that backlights this plant is coming from thousands of Horsetails
in a forest clearing drenched in sunlight.

Peter C Fisher Gallery Madrona Bark Orcas Island

Madrona Bark • 1985

This close up image is of a small section of a Madrona Tree trunk. The lower middle branch has broken off and the tree has tried to heal around the wound. It is possible that the interesting colors around the periphery of the wound are the result of the often slow process of this part of the tree dying.

The Rapids

A slow shutter speed and an overcast sky collaborate to showcase the coppery tone of the stream reflecting the colors in the surrounding landscape. The kinetic quality of the water captures the lively spirit of these rapids in a time of high water.

Charolais, Driftwood Ranch

This bucolic scene was mine to enjoy every day as I walked around the Grindstone Harbor area. This day my friends, these pampered cows, happily cooperated or ignored me as I adjusted my tripod to take a portrait of these handsome animals.

Grove at Sunset

The combination of primary colors and strong evening light endow this scene with a vibrant sensibility. Madronas, the view down Eastsound and the mossy foreground collude to imbue this photograph with an iconic sense of the San Juan's beauty.

Peter C Fisher Gallery Orcas Island Buddha and Child

Buddha and Child

I took this poignant image in 1974 on my first trip tp Japan; this is the giant sitting Buddha at Kamakura cast in Bronze in the 1400's after a wood version (with roof) was blown away in a storm. This picture was one of five in my first ever exhibit: the juried "Photography 1975" show at Tacoma Art Museum.

Cascade Falls

Taken with a Deardorff View Camera on 4x5 inch Tri-x sheet film with a shutter speed of 30 seconds, this dramatic view over the top of the uppermost falls is no longer visible. In 1989, in a huge windstorm, the giant cedar on the left toppled. I love the Molten feel of the water in the foreground and the trail of light that wanders up the middle of the frame, drawing one's gaze upward.

Peter C Fisher Gallery Orcas Island Twisted Trunks Madrona Point

Twisted Trunks

In contrast to "Grove at Sunset", this photograph features the soft enveloping light of a cloudy day. This diffused illumination reveals the texture of the multicolored dark with nuance, and a velvety feel. It seems as if the cluster of trees is dancing in joy, twisting in sheer delight at the sounds of the forest.

Fallen Trees

A A few years ago a number of trees crashed down into the ravine where Cascade Falls resides. I took advantage of this challenging situation by using telephoto lens to turn the jumble of downfall into a framing device for viewing it in a new way.

Peter C Fisher Gallery Orcas Island Window Reflections Madrona Point

Window Reflection

Madrona Point was a vacation resort from the 1890's until 1967. This reflection in one of the cabins' windows benefits from the dark interior which allows light to bounce off both surfaces of the old glass, creating a variety of interesting visual effects.

Eirik's Cabin

I went to school in Norway when I was 20 and I am half Norske. I returned in 2013 and my best friend, Eirek Bratviet, had built his vacation cabin. A two hour hike up a stream. Berry picking, fishing, hiking...living is good in the mountains of Norway!
